Scappoose:

Proprietors Alice Romig, Darion Jones and Chuck Nakvasil, along with Chef Don Savio, have opened a worthwhile new dining stop in this historic community, not really known for gourmet dining.

Romig's Home-Style Restaurant (33466 Havlik Drive, 503-543-4166; www.romigs.com) offers several dishes worthy of a try. Sandwiches, including burgers, are a specialty here; the pastrami and French dip are outstanding. Romig has a long history in the produce industry, so you can be assured the fruits and vegetables here are crisp and fresh; try the "Chopstick" salad. There's more: fish and chips, stuffed pork loin and a brisket that melts in your mouth. Sunday brunches are an area favorite, served from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the crispy potatoes alone worth a visit.
